Holistic Drug and Alcohol Detox in Los Angeles, California

Sep 10, 2020 | Addiction Treatment

When most people think of rehab, they think of medication only. However, there is another possible avenue for getting over an addiction. Holistic alcohol rehab centers can provide an alternative environment for people who wish to recover but may not want the harsh medical treatment.

We at CNV detox, in Los Angeles, California treat substance use disorders through a combination of medication and therapy. Medication is initially used to ease the patient from the physical pain and anxiety of detoxification when needed. Once the patient is relatively comfortable, an individualized treatment plan is created. Patients play an active role in developing their treatment plans. Process of treatment is a combination of process groups, psycho-educational groups, and individualized therapy, which is primarily an integration of best practices including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Psycho-Education, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), Mindfulness and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Our detox protocols, including length of stay and prescribed medications, are determined by our Staff Physician after the patient completes an Initial History and Physical (H&P) Assessment. Each patient has an opportunity to discuss their specific situation with our Staff Physician upon admission and face-to-face updates throughout the stay. In addition, each patient is visited by our psychiatrist.

Our extensive programs, seven days per week, provides healing and support for long-term success in recovery. Within a caring family environment, our patients attend process groups, individual therapy with licensed/certified clinicians, relapse prevention, breathwork, yoga, and physical training.

Holistic Drug and Alcohol Detox/Rehab vs. Traditional Alcohol Rehab

Although holistic alcohol rehab and traditional rehab have the same goals, they are different in their approaches to treatment. Traditional rehab takes a more structured clinical approach, while holistic alcohol rehab centers are more relaxed. In a traditional center, you’ll go through a medical detox where clinicians will monitor your withdrawal symptoms. Then, you’ll attend a series of individual and group therapy appointments. Traditional alcohol rehab centers also tend to push medication, which may not always prove to be helpful for some.

holistic alcohol rehab centers

Holistic alcohol rehab centers encourage patients to look inside themselves for solutions and emphasize self-discovery. Holistic treatment holds the belief that our bodies can heal themselves, and they push the idea that we can take responsibility for our health and well-being. Rather than teaching typical sobriety skills, holistic treatment relies on focusing on the body to help guide you on a sober path. A holistic detox might consist of minimizing your drug of choice and putting you on a cleanse with water, healthy food, and herbal supplements.

Whichever treatment you decide to enroll in will be determined by your individual needs and situation. CNV Detox can help you figure out the best program for you.

Does Insurance Cover Holistic Treatment?

Only certain insurance companies cover treatment at holistic alcohol rehab centers since it’s considered “alternative medicine,” which isn’t recognized by all companies. This can make paying for holistic treatment difficult, which is why we can help you find a program that is covered. If your insurance doesn’t cover any holistic treatment and you have to pay privately, we can help you find one that’s affordable.

If you have private or corporate insurance coverage, your treatment at CNV Detox is most likely covered! CNV Detox is in-network with HMC HealthWorks, Health Net, Com-Psych, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Anthem Blue Cross, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Emblem Health, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare and Meritain Health.

Yoga

An ancient Indian practice, yoga has become a widely popular form of exercise and recreation. Yoga can help with relaxation, body issues, and achieving self-awareness.

Yoga is also a part of ayurvedic medicine, which also includes meditation and strict dietary guidelines that will nurture your body, mind, and spirit. By practicing yoga, you can become more mindful and in control of your emotions. People with both borderline personality disorder and alcoholism can have trouble doing this, which is why yoga can greatly benefit them.

Meditation

Meditation and yoga often go hand in hand, but meditation can also be done by itself. It’s an effective and simple exercise that can calm the mind and help manage stressful behaviors that might have led to your addiction.

Meditation can quiet the negative voices and thoughts in your head and help you focus on the present moment. It will also help you practice gratitude and observe all the wonderful things about your life.

Art Therapy

Art has long been an outlet for creative expression, and it can do wonders for people recovering from addiction. In art therapy at holistic alcohol rehab centers, patients can put their feelings and thoughts on paper through activities like drawing, painting, and pottery. By crafting and making art, recovering addicts can see how much fun they can have while sober. They can also explore their feelings and even discover a talent they never knew they had.

Spiritual Care

Many people find that believing in a higher power can save them from addiction. One of the main components of support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous is that achieving spirituality is key for recovery.

Addiction to alcohol or drugs may have put the things most important to you, like family, friends, and your career, on the back burner. The belief behind spiritual care is restoring a person’s faith and their belief in a higher power.

Wilderness Therapy

Wilderness therapy combines the beauty of the great outdoors with the mental benefits of therapy. The unfamiliar surroundings of the wilderness help patients address their mental health and behavioral issues. Wilderness therapy is mainly geared toward teenagers and young adults, but all can participate.

In wilderness therapy, members are guided by a trained therapist who examines the behaviors that led them to addiction. By learning team-building exercises and primitive skills training, members learn how to change their negative behaviors into positive ones. The outdoors provides a supportive and judgment-free zone for people trying to recover from addiction, and they learn how to accept feedback, form healthy relationships and adapt to their environment.

Nutrition

Nutrition plays an important part in any person’s life, but it’s especially important in holistic treatment. Holistic alcohol rehab centers will often provide healthy, balanced meals to patients, and this will improve their immune systems. Having a better immune system can help you fight off disease and infection.

When patients enter rehab, they’re usually malnourished from addiction. Drinking too much or constantly taking drugs can limit a person’s appetite. These toxic chemicals may have also done a number on their bodies. By learning more about nutrition and eating correctly, recovering addicts can feel better about themselves and get back to a healthier physical state.

Some holistic alcohol rehab centers have gardens on-site, and chefs prepare healthy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners from the fruits and vegetables grown there.

Individual Therapy (CBT)

Some holistic alcohol rehab centers do rely on traditional modes of individual therapy, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT emphasizes observing a person’s emotions, thoughts and behaviors.

Instead of trying to figure out why someone acts a certain way, CBT therapists focus on the patient’s thoughts in the present moment, and they help him or her identify any negative behaviors. They teach patients more healthy, positive behaviors and outlooks that will better them in the long run. This type of therapy can also identify negative and unproductive behaviors that have led to your addiction.

CBT is offered in brief, structured sessions, and treatment is completed in anywhere from five to 20 sessions. Therapists will assign homework that will help you apply the skills you’ve learned to real-world situations. CBT teaches patients how to positively manage their emotions, and it can also help treat mental illness when medication isn’t effective.

Massage

Massage has long been an effective technique for relieving pain throughout the body. It’s also thought to be a beneficial form of treatment for addiction, soothing aches and pains while providing stress relief. Massages are said to release dopamine and serotonin, which are hormones that make people feel good.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting tiny needles into your skin at specific points in the body. This practice is said to relieve pain and benefit a person’s overall wellness.

Traditional Chinese medicine promotes the idea that illness causes a person’s life force (“qi”, pronounced “chi”) to go out of balance. It’s believed to be a technique for balancing one’s life force that flows through the body. Acupuncture is said to bring the qi back into balance by inserting needles into 350 body points, which lie on “meridians,” or pathways, in the body.

Since the needles are thin, acupuncture isn’t very painful. Sessions at holistic alcohol rehab centers usually take about 30 minutes, and results can show up after eight to 12 sessions.

Homeopathy

A homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine that suggests that the body can heal itself. It promotes two unorthodox theories:

  • “Law of minimum dose”: The lower the dose of medication, the more effective it is.
  • “Like cures like”: An illness can be cured by a substance that causes similar symptoms in healthy people.

Homeopathic remedies usually include plants, animals (crushed whole bees), and minerals (white arsenic) as well. For example, homeopathic remedies for allergies include red onions since they make your eyes water. Many of these remedies barely have any molecules left over from the original substance, so they normally come in drops or sugar pellets.

In holistic alcohol rehab centers, homeopathic remedies are used to mitigate some of the stronger withdrawal symptoms instead of medication.
